Every business needs bookkeeping, which involves recording every financial transaction for that business. But not everyone knows how to properly do that, and not everyone is good at it! After all, most people don’t get into business wanting to get bogged down by record keeping!

Our goal is to provide each client with the specific services they need to affordably maintain an accurate set of records, improve office work flow and efficiency, and keep compliant with state, insurance, and industry requirements.

We work with clients in a variety of service industries, including contracting and landscaping, as well as those in retail and online sales, medical professionals, publishers, and landlords.

All of our work can be done remotely, including client training with QuickBooks.

We are located in the Portland Maine area, but work with clients in other states (notably Massachusetts and Vermont).  We love living in Maine and are constantly inspired by the beauty of the natural world around us, as well as the many thriving small businesses in the area.

Irene Coon, Founder

Irene founded Common Cents Bookkeeping in 1986 and has over 40 years of experience in bookkeeping and accounting. Over the years she has seen the business change enormously—early on she converted many clients to their very first computerized bookkeeping systems. Today we can digitize everything for our paperless office and work entirely remotely if needed. Irene finds her love of solving puzzles and reading mysteries to be of great service when delving into a new clients’ books or just trying to decipher complex transactions.

Heather coon, Co-owner

Heather joined her mother, Irene, at Common Cents in 2013. She has a Ph.D. and left a tenured position as a social psychologist when she moved to Maine. She loves her new career as much as her old one, and is often surprised at how similar they can be at times…nudging students to turn in assignments is not that different from nudging clients to post their receipts! Her love of teaching is also on display when training clients in QuickBooks or showing them how to read their financial statements. At home, she is ruled by her Pugs.
